Kansas House Republicans propose alternative to broad budget cuts
Written on March 21, 2010
House Republicans think they have a budget that does not raise taxes and squares with a constitutional requirement to remain balanced.
House leaders said their proposed budget makes targeted spending reductions rather than large swaths of cuts.
It also envisions freezing state spending at current levels.
Moreover, it eschews tax increases that Gov. Mark Parkinson proposed, such as a increasing sales tax by 1 percent and raising tobacco taxes.
“Through good policy, further efficiencies and better money management, we have identified more than enough in savings and recovered revenue to span the gap without damaging our economy with statewide tax increases,” Kevin Yoder, House Appropriations Committee chairman, said in a release guaranteed high risk personal loans.
Whether the House budget squares with the Senate, which has generally been more amenable to the prospect of a tax increase to fill the state’s $400 million budget imbalance, remains to be seen.
